May 21 Benefit concert at First Parish Chelmsford for Lowell Transitional Living Center
On Saturday, May 21, at 7 PM, the third in the First Parish Unitarian Universalist Church Concert Series organized to benefit social action will be held. The series began with concerts organized each year by Henry Tervo, with two more concerts added this year. This year''s third Concert will benefit the Lowell Transitional Living Center.
For more than 30 years, the Lowell Transitional Living Center has been serving theneeds of homeless people in the Merrimack Valley. The largest shelter north of Boston, the Center provides emergency and transitional shelter (including expanded beds during the winter), supportive housing, meals (300 a day!), and support services such as case management, street outreach, health access, and treatment referrals. Music by Saint-Saëns, Brahms, Chopin, Kreisler, Ostransky and also Jazz improvisations will be performed by Janice Tervo (cello), Henry Tervo (oboe), Mark Tervo (saxophone), Steve Zocchi (piano).Guest performers will include Elisabeth Clemens (flute), Charles Learoyd (clarinet), Bryce Denney (piano),Victor Troll (piano), and Lynn Geltman (clarinet).

Janice Palken-Tervo: M.M. (cello) Yale Music School; cello studies with Aldo Parisot & Antonio Janigro. Performed with Dusseldorf Opera Theater, Kassel Opera Theater, Berlin Operetta, New Jersey Symphony, Springfield Symphony, & Pro Art Chamber Orchestra. Solo & chamber music performances throughout area; co-founder of the "Friends of Bach" vocal/instrumental ensemble.
Henry Tervo: M.M (oboe), New England Conservatory of Music; B.M.Ed, University of Lowell; oboe studies with Ralph Gomberg & John Holmes; English horn studies with Lawrence Thorstenberg. Currently: founder and music director of the "Friends of Bach" vocal/instrumental ensemble; oboe d'amore specialist; solo and chamber music performances throughout the area to benefit social action and humanitarian organizations; oboe/ensemble
instructor, Indian Hill Music School; formerly: English horn, Portland Symphony Orchestra; freelance appearances with Opera Co. of Boston, Boston Ballet, Colonial and Wang Theaters; Gardner Museum chamber concerts; oboe
instructor, Belmont Music school; woodwind instructor, Lynn, Lynnfield and Weston public schools and Gordon College .
Mark Tervo, clarinet & saxophone, plays regularly with the Chelmsford Communityband and has performed with the Concord Band, Sounds of Stow Orchestra and Massachusetts Youth Wind Ensemble. He performs regularly with jazz ensembles at Indian Hill Music and Blues Jams throughout the area.
Steve Zocchi is a pianist/organist, guitarist, composer and music teacher from the MetroWest area. He received his BA in Piano Performance from UMass Lowell. He supplemented his musical education by studying piano with
Constantine Finehouse and jazz piano theory with Steve Hunt. Steve studied organ with Dr. John Ogasapian and served as his Assistant Organist at St. Anne's Church in Lowell from 1997-1999. He would become Interim Organist
and Choir Director after Dr. Ogasapian's departure. He then served as Music Minister at St. John's Episcopal Church in Lowell from 2000-2014. Steve became the Music Director at First Parish Unitarian Universalist, Chelmsford, in September of 2014. Mr. Zocchi has performed in numerous eclectic piano concerts at local venues, juxtaposing classical, jazz and original compositions. He owns The Music Studio in Tewksbury, MA, where he
teaches piano and guitar to over 50 students per week. Steve served as president of the Greater Lowell Music Teachers Association from 2006 to 2012 and was voted 'Music Teacher of the Year 2010' by Massachusetts Music
Teachers Association. He was also co-director of The Piano Heritage Series at The Parish Center for the Arts in Westford for several years. Steve's latest release 'Piano Works and Play' as well as his previous CD
'Compositions and Improvisation' include both music composed in the classical tradition and improvised music in several genres. Sheet music for his compositions can be viewed at musicaneo.com.
The approximately one-hour concert will be followed by a reception with light refreshments. The concert will be held in the church, which is located at 2 Westford Street on the Chelmsford town common. Suggested donation is $15 ($8 for children 12 and under).
