Drew Dawson Joins Century Club for Lions Hockey

Chelmsford's senior forward reached 100 points during Monday's game versus Central Catholic.

In a new Patch feature, we will spotlight athletes each week who make contributions on and off the playing field. This week we look at Drew Dawson, a senior captain on the boys hockey team.

Chelmsford senior forward Tommy Bishop joined the 100-point club earlier this season. As of this week, he has company.

Fellow captain Drew Dawson crossed the 100-point threshold during Monday’s tilt with Central Catholic, continuing a stellar career that has been key in helping rejuvenate the Lions hockey program.

“The kid (Dawson) can shoot the puck,” said head coach Mike McGrath. “He and Bishop have worked well together for years now, and that’s why they both have over 100. They found their niche, and have been doing it well for the last three years.”

Dawson is quick to pass credit for his own success to his teammate Bishop. He said the two have developed a chemistry and enjoy skating on the same line together.

“I give (Bishop) a lot of credit,” said Dawson. “We play good together and really feed off of each other. Not a lot of guys get to 100 points in their career, so it feels great.”

The senior isn’t sure yet what his future playing career will consist of. He’s currently researching to see if he’d be able to walk on and make a college team somewhere, or if he will instead play junior hockey.

As for this season, Dawson said he and his teammates are optimistic as they prepare for what they hope will be a deep postseason run. The team is hoping to avenge a 2-1 shootout loss to Wakefield last season in the North Division 2 semifinal, a setback that still doesn't sit well with Dawson and his teammates.

“I think we’re in a good spot heading into the tournament,” said Dawson. “If anyone has a good shot, I think it’s us just because we have a couple of guys on the team who have been there before. Last year’s loss to Wakefield hurt. But I think the team we have now is better than the team we had last year.”
