Long Distance Hiker Returns to Chelmsford

On Wednesday, April 4 at 7 p.m., noted long-distance hiker Andrew Skurka will present an Ultimate Hiking Gear & Skills Clinic. Skurka is one of the most accomplished backpackers in the world. National Geographic magazine has called him “. . . a superman among trekkers.”

Skurka has hiked over 30,000 miles through Alaska, Canada, the Rockies and Appalachians, the American Southwest, Iceland and South Africa. He is best known for his solo hikes, including the 4,680-mile 6-month Alaska-Yukon Expedition, the 6,875-mile 7-month Great Western Loop, and the 7,778-mile 11-month Sea-to-Sea Route. He has been named “Adventurer of the Year” by the National Geographic Society and by Outside, and “Person of the Year” by Backpacker. He is the author of “The Ultimate Hiker’s Gear Guide.”

The presentation will be held at the Innovation Academy Charter School, 72 Tyng Road, Tyngsboro. Tickets will be available at the door for a donation of $10, or can be purchased in advance by contacting Phil at t77clinic@hotmail.com. Proceeds will benefit Chelmsford’s Boy Scout Troop 77.

During an interview on Chelmsford Telemedia last October, Skurka noted a backpacking trip consists of two distinct activities: hiking and camping. In this clinic, Skurka will discuss the gear, supplies and skills necessary to make hiking both more fun and less work, without compromising safety or comfort in camp. He will begin with a discussion on defining trip objectives and assessing conditions likely to be encountered. Then, he will explain exactly what he would bring on a hypothetical multi-day trip in a nearby and familiar location, such as the White or Green mountains.

Skurka will respond to questions from the audience. Signed copies of his just published book, The Ultimate Hiker’s Gear Guide, will be available for purchase before and after the clinic. More information about Andrew Skurka can be found at  andrewskurka.com.
