Fatal Motorbike Crash: Lowell Man Killed

A Lowell man riding a motorbike was hit by a dump truck in Pelham, New Hampshire, and later died, police said.

PELHAM, NH — A man riding a motorbike was killed in New Hampshire Friday after police said he was struck by a dump truck. The victim was identified as Paul Nieves, 59, of Lowell. The crash happened in Pelham on Route 38 at about 2:45 p.m.

Police said Nieves was riding his motor-driven Schwinn bicycle north on the road when a 39-year-old Pelham man driving a Ford dump truck southbound turned onto Jericho Road in front of Nieves. (Sign up for free daily newsletters and breaking news alerts from Massachusetts Patch sites.)

"The cycle subsequently struck the right rear of the (dump truck)," Pelham police said in a statement.

Nieves was transported to Lowell General Hospital in Massachusetts, where he was pronounced dead.

"At this time the collision remains under investigation," police said. "It does not appear that impairment was a factor in the collision, however all aspects are still under investigation, including speed and/or distraction."

Part of Route 38 was closed for several hours as authorities investigated the scene.
