How Big is Chelmsford's Irish Population?

Over the years, St. Patrick’s Day has become more than a day of appreciation for St. Patrick. The holiday has turned into a day to celebrate all things Irish.

Massachusetts will have no problem getting into the Irish spirit, as the state has the highest percentage of residents with Irish ancestry in the nation. About 21.3 percent of residents claimed Irish ancestry, according to census data.

While everyone is Irish on St. Patrick’s Day, how many people in Chelmsford have some Irish in them every day of the year?

The U.S. Census Bureau reports 31 percent of the Chelmsford population claims Irish ancestry. Of a total population of 34,337, about 10,693 people in Chelmsford are Irish.

Plymouth was found to be the most Irish town in the state by WCVB, with 41.9 percent of its population claiming Irish ancestry.

You don’t have to wait until Tuesday, March 17 to appreciate Irish heritage. The entire month of March was named Irish-American Heritage Month by Congress in 1991.
