'Lethal' Opiate Batch In Lowell Area: 21 Overdoses In 1 Week
Officials are warning greater Lowell residents after a recent surge of overdoses, three of which have been fatal.

LOWELL, MA – First responders are warning greater Lowell residents of a "lethal" opiate batch after a recent surge of overdoses. The Lowell Fire Department responded to 21 overdoses over the past week, including eight in the last 24 hours. Three of those were fatal, fire officials said.
"There appears to be a lethal, very strong batch of opiates in the area," Lowell Fire Chief Jeffrey Winward said in a statement. "We strongly urge people not to use opiates, but if you or your loved one is suffering from addiction, please be extra vigilant in the coming days."
Deadly fentanyl is being mixed with heroin and cocaine and is being sold in pill form, according to Winward.
