UPDATE: One Taken Into Custody After Chelmsford Standoff

SWAT team, officers take armed person into custody on Piccadilly Circle.

Update, 12:31 a.m. April 28: NEMLEC SWAT reported on Twitter a few minutes ago that its team had an ”armed barricaded suspect in custody” after its chief negotiator talked the suspect into surrendering. The standoff lasted about three hours, according to the team. Chelmsford Police dispatch is reporting that no information will be released to the press at this time.

Chelmsford Police, NEMLEC, and fire and rescue teams are reportedly in the area Roberts Field on Westford Street at this hour for an unknown, ongoing police action, possibly a standoff, according to reports on social media.

Anywhere between 25 and 30 police vehicles, including the SWAT team, are at the scene.

The Lowell Sun is reporting that a staging area has been set up on Old Westford Road not far from the incident location at Westford Street and Piccadilly Circle but also that police aren’t releasing any specifics about the incident.

Reports online state that it’s a possible hostage situation and police are negotiating an end to the standoff.

At around 10 p.m., according to the Tyngsborough Alert blog, police requested NEMLEC to come to the scene. A K-9 unit from Tyngsborough was also called in but returned to the station at just before 11 p.m.

According to the FAA, temporary flight restrictions have been implemented around the incident scene location.

“Only relief aircraft operations under direction of the Chelmsford Police Dept are authorized in the airspace,” according to the notice.

A number of posts to social media sites stated that the incident appeared to unfold after a car repossession was attempted.

Neither Chief James Spinney nor Deputy Chief Daniel Ahern returned a request for information at post time.
