Progress at the Chelmsford Public Garden
This article describes the project of the Chelmsford Garden Club at the Chelmsford Public Garden.
Chirping birds are not the only sound at the Chelmsford Public Garden these days. Emanouil Brothers’ bulldozer made a gentle roar as it spread loam and a crew from Marty’s Landscaping thumped tiles while making the handicapped walk which is in the shape of a beautiful tree. The tables and benches have arrived and are awaiting installation, and every day brings a change. Here are a few examples of donated trees awaiting planting for our pleasure:
Magnolia “X Elizabeth,” This first yellow-flowered hybrid magnolia features finely tapered buds that open to a fragrant primrose yellow flower which appear early on leafless stems.
Japanese Lilac “Ivory Silk,” Unlike our old-fashioned lilac, this tree bears huge clusters of creamy white flowers for two weeks in early summer.

Red Bud “Forest Pansy,” Stunning pea-like rose-purple flowers bloom profusely on bare branches in early spring before the foliage emerges.
Blue Spruce “Fat Albert,” Like its namesake this is a very dense pyramidal evergreen–the perfect Christmas tree!

Flowering Cherry, Found in Washington, DC and the Boston Public Garden, the species is noted for producing a heavy bloom of semi-double pink flowers in spring.
Now here is the good news. You can still donate a shrub or plant! The focal trees will be complemented by smaller shrubs and plants and you can never have too many blooming flowers. You can email chelmsfordgardenclub14@gmail for more information. When stopped at the center lights, keep an eye out for changes as the garden grows.
