Remains Found In Concord River Identified As Judy Chartier

CHELMSFORD, MA — The human remains found during a search of the Concord River Wednesday have been positively identified as those of missing Chelmsford teen Judy Chartier, according to the Middlesex DA’s office.

The identification was made through dental records, said investigators. The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner and Forensic Anthropologist Dr. James T. Pokines will now work to reconstruct the remains in an attempt to determine a cause of death.

Chartier went missing after leaving a party in Billerica on June 5, 1982. Significant parts of her car were recovered from the Concord River Tuesday.

The remains, along with several personal items including a work identification badge, clothing, and a small purse, were found Wednesday during an ongoing investigation into Chartier’s disappearance. Both the car and the remains were located in about 10 feet of water 15 to 20 yards from the shore.

Police said that, as part of its ongoing commitment to the Chartier case, the Middlesex District Attorney’s Office Cold Case unit, utilized sonar technology this week to search an area of the river located about a mile from the Chartier home.
