William Guerra is the Winner of the WGBH Google STEM Teacher Video Challenge

How does a teacher see a walk in the woods? As a teachable moment about fossils, of course!

Video can be a great way to bring your students along on a journey that you can’t have in the classroom, and that is what Mr. Guerra did when he demonstrated the difference between trace and mold fossils on a snowy trail.

This video is a great example of how a focused learning goal and a good story can come together in a simple, yet compelling and charming video. The vocabulary is accessible, the situation is something that all students can relate to (snow!), and the use of simple on screen annotations supports vocabulary. At 2 minutes, it is a good length for classroom use. Congratulations to Will Guerra for recognizing, and capturing, a teachable moment in this STEM video winner.
