C-C Field Hockey Finishes Second in DCL

Patriots turn attention to upcoming North D-2 sectional tournament.

As always seems to be the case, the top spot in the Dual County League small division field hockey standings came down to the final regular season meeting between the Concord-Carlisle High School and Wayland High School this week.

With both already having secured a spot in next week's MIAA North Division 2 sectional tournament, DCL bragging rights were on the line. Wayland won the matchup in the final seconds of a 1-0 decision.

Wayland scored the winning goal with 16 seconds remaining, off of a penalty corner.

"Shelly Frasier, the Wayland coach, had her team at a level of intensity that was not going to be denied," C-C coach Betsy Smith said.

That wrapped up the regular season with Wayland in first place in the DCL at 11-3-3, followed by the Patriots at 10-4-3 and Weston at 9-3-4 (10-4-4 overall). C-C and Weston began the final-week, round-robin of top league teams with a 1-1 tie on Tuesday.

Now, all will focus their attention on the postseason. Official seedings for the sectional tournament is due out on Monday, according to the MIAA. The first round of games will be played on Nov. 3 with the sectional final slated for Nov. 13. State final games are scheduled for Nov. 30.

"We are happy to be headed to the state tournament next week, which was our goal all season," said Smith, who also acknowledged the solid play of Makayla Barton, Caroline Guild, Marin Epstein and Lindsey Verrill against Wayland.
