CC Fencing on the road in Connecticut.

CC Fencing on the road in Connecticut.

This morning the CC fencing team saw a 6:15 am start to the day and another long bus ride to the Hopkins School in New Haven, CT to fence Greenwich, Hopkins and Mamaroneck, NY.

The first meet was against Greenwich, CT. This was a new team for CC, usually the 4th school at this meet is Riverdale Country School in the Bronx. The scouting report (ok, the Hopkins Coach) said then men’s team was pretty good and the women’s team was ok.  The format of the women’s meet was modified a bit to accommodate the late arrival of two Greenwich women’s foil fencers. Epee and Sabre started first and when they were complete CC was behind 8-10. The women’s foil team was able to claw their way back until Captain Carolyn Lu ’14 tied the score at 12-12. Natalie Ma ’16 score the go ahead win with a 5-2 win and second generation CC fencer Claire Dettelbach ’17 won the 14th bout to win the meet.  The team was up for a bit of a challenge. Despite the sabre squad leading the team to a 6-3 the foil and epee teams were only able to score 3 additional wins leading to a 6-21 loss.

The second round, against Hopkins, ended with a complete reversal from last weekend at Dana Hall. The Women’s sabre and foil squads traded matches with Hopkins leading to a 4-5 loss for both squads. Unfortunately, Women’s epee was in for a tough fight and was only able to come away with 2-7 loss. Final score for the women was 10-17 loss. The Men’s Team was able to turn things around from last week’s loss.  Men’s Sabre started strong with 3 wins in the first round. By the end of the second round, CC had a 10-8 lead. Sabre fencers Kevin Fan ’15 and Captain Jacob Hession-Kunz ‘ 14 each put  up a win in the 3rd round and foil fencers Trey Powers ’15 and clinching the win Max Krims ’15. Final score 14-13

The third round the team fenced Mamaroneck HS, NY.  The women jumped out to a 14-4 lead by the end of the second round and once again Clair Dettelbach ’17 won the deciding 14th match. The men’s team had similar success jumping to a 12-6 lead and Owen Krueger ’16 won the 14th bout to win the meet. This gave the team a chance to make substitution and giving the newer fencers a chance to fence.
