CONCORD – Author Stephen Lane will lead a panel discussion about his book No Sanctuary: Teachers and the School Reform that Brought Gay Rights to the Masses on Wednesday, September 12th at 7:00 p.m. at the Main Library (129 Main St.). The event will be followed by a reception.
No Sanctuary: Teachers and the School Reform that Brought Gay Rights to the Masses tells the story of a mostly unseen rescue attempt by a small group of Boston-area teachers who led the push to make schools safer for LGBT youth. Their efforts, begun in isolation at their individual schools, became the blueprint for Massachusetts education policy and then the model for a nationwide movement, resulting in one of the most successful, far-reaching and ongoing school reform efforts in recent times.
Stephen Lane is a teacher of history, economics, and climate change policy at Concord-Carlisle High School (CCHS). He earned a Bachelor’s degree with honors in political science from Williams College, and a Masters degree in education from Simmons College. In 2016, Lane was named the “Distinguished K-12 Educator” by the American Meteorological Society, the first non-science teacher to be so honored.
