Charles Dickens and Great Expectations, by Randall Warniers

Talk and slideshow

The Concord Free Public Library is pleased to announce that Randall Warniers will present a talk on the life of Charles Dickens and his novel Great Expectations at the Fowler Branch of the Concord Free Public Library (1322 Main Street) on Monday, February 27th at 7:00 PM.

Charles Dickens is widely considered the greatest novelist of the Victorian era, and his 1861 novel Great Expectations is widely considered the best English novel of the mid-19th century. Great Expectations tells the story of Pip, a young orphan who as a child has a frightening encounter in a graveyard, and who grows into a fine young man of ambition and promise. In the course of the story Pip makes friends, falls in love, starts a career, finds a benefactor, and has dramatic adventures. Pip aspires to improve himself, not through class snobbery, but through the Victorian values of education and social refinement, which were noble goals for young gentlemen of his day.

This lecture and slideshow will discuss the life and work of Charles Dickens, emphasizing his influence on the rise of literacy and social reforms during his lifetime and describing the literary quality and social value of Great Expectations.
