December brought some cold, wintery weather, but a definite bright spot was the annual Concord Friends of the Aging Christmas party, a perennial favorite! Over 200 Concord seniors gathered by the hearth of the Maynard Elks Lodge as they reconnected with friends, longstanding and new. Accordionist Ray Cavicchio filled the hall with popular Christmas music throughout the afternoon. Guests were also treated to a delightful performance by Concord’s own Music Makers singing group. The highlight of the afternoon was a wonderful solo rendition of Silent Night, performed by Al Robichaud. Be sure to save the date for this year’s Christmas party to be held again at the Maynard Elks on Wednesday, December 4, 2019!

In January, the Concord Housing Authority (CHA) celebrated the grand opening of a beautiful new community room at Peter Bulkeley Terrace that was funded and supported by Concord Friends of the Aging. “I have been told that it is getting a lot more use from the residents than ever before,” Michael Benn, vice-president of Concord Friends of the Aging said. “It really seems to have improved the quality of life for many of these seniors.”[1] Concord Friends of the Aging is proud to have worked with the CHA to see this worthy project through completion.

Following the annual Thanksgiving luncheon, another terrific event that was put on by the spirited students of CCHS and funded by a grant from the Concord Friends of the Aging, the CFoA set its sights on producing a brand-new annual event. One that would bring seniors back out of their homes to welcome the brilliant colors, and exceptional weather of the springtime along with great friends.

In April, the Concord Friends of the Aging held its first annual Spring Fling. With a lively repertoire of American Songbook, The Tylers helped the enthusiastic crowd shake off the winter doldrums and put everyone in the mood for spring and summer! The responses from the attendees was enthusiastically positive and the CFoA is looking forward to doing it all over again in May of 2020.

In addition to producing wonderful events, the Concord Friends of the Aging continues to provide grant funding to worthy organizations that ably serve Concord’s senior community. The CFoA provided funding to FISH (Friends In Service Helping), an all-volunteer organization which provides rides to and from medical appointments in or near Concord. In addition, Concord Friend of the Aging continues to fund client(s) of Concord Cooperative Elder Services, which currently operates private, nonprofit adult day health programs and serves 500 caregivers and seniors and adults with medical or cognitive challenges.

Concord Friends of the Aging Corporation is a private nonprofit corporation whose mission is to provide funding for programs and services in education, health, entertainment, and social interaction exclusively for the Concord senior community (those age 60 and over).
