Fall Weaving Classes at the Umbrella Community Arts Center

Learn from veteran basket-maker Debra Rolfe!

This fall, the Umbrella Arts & Environment is offering two weaving classes for adults with veteran basket-maker Debra Rolfe. In Brown Bag Recycling Basket, students will weave a recycling basket out of reed. The basket is perfectly sized to fit a brown paper shopping bag inside. In the second class, Basket Making: Plaited Play, students will use paper to learn the ancient weaving technique of plaiting and if time allows, will try their hand at plaiting with cattail leaves.

Our weaving instructor, Debra Rolfe, has been weaving for almost 25 years and teaching weaving to children and adults for 15 years. She is passionate about transcending artistic boundaries and encourages her students to move beyond the prototypes that she provides and to engage with the various weaving techniques and available materials.

At the foundation of Debra’s work is the connection between arts and the environment that the Umbrella Arts & Environment is based on. Debra and her students use natural materials like cattail leaves and reed to weave together their creations. They take what already exists in our natural environment and transform it into art. But Debra and her students also use recycled materials. The unfortunate reality of the modern world is the abundance of paper and plastic that dominates the environment. In using recycled materials for weaving, Debra and her students create something beautiful while working to maintain the beauty of the natural environment.
