CC Fencing had the final meet of the season against Dana Hall School for the Women’s Team and St John’s Prep for the Men’s Team. These three schools are the historic fencing programs in the state and have been fencing each other for many years. Although there are not complete records for the Women’s Teams, the Men’s Teams have been fencing since 1971. Although the CC Men’s Team has had a lot of close calls they had not beaten the Prep since 2009 when they ended the Prep’s quest for an undefeated season.
For this meet the CC Women’s Team was hopping to even the score from the 8-19 loss in December in the Dana Hall fencing studio. The young CC women’s team was up against a more seasoned Dana Hall team and despite a 2-1 finish from Jackie Luckner ’14 on the epee squad, it wasn’t enough. The final score was 9-18.
The Men’s team was looking answer the 13-14 loss in December and this one also came down to the wire. In the first round, the CC team finished with a 5-4 lead and hoped to go in strong to the second round. However, SJP was able to pull into the lead ending the second round at 8-10. In a quick huddle before the third round started, 6 CC fencers said they would win their bout and capture the 14th bout. Sabre was first and Captain Jacob Hession-Kunz ‘14 and Kevin Fan ’15 came up with two wins as promised. Epee Squad leader Lucas Hickman ’16 and Foil Squad leader Trey Powers ’15 both won increasing the score to 12-11. In foil, Jacob Golson ’16 came back from a 2-4 deficit to win 5-4 but Maxwell Krims ’15 lost to top SJP foilist. 13-11 with two bouts to go in epee, first year fencer Jeremy Wilson ’16 was the next match and with the score tied 4-4 Jeremy was able to score the winning touch to win the 14th bout in the meet and ending the SJP winning streak against CCHS.

This was the last meet of the season and although the scores only show a 1 point difference from December to February, the team that fenced today is a completely different team than the team that faced SJP and Dana Hall in December. This team has made amazing progress in the last month and a half and with only 5 seniors on the team this year, the CC team looks to be in good shape for the next few years.
Sunday, the team will fence in the state championships at BB&N. Fencing starts at 9 am and the CC team has a chance to have a very good day. Admission is free if anyone wants to come down and support the team.
