Fire Forces Closure Of Concord Grade School

Thoreau Elementary School was closed Tuesday following the Monday night fire.

CONCORD, MA — Thoreau Elementary School was closed Tuesday following a Monday night ceiling fire.

The Concord Fire and Police Departments responded to the school on Prairie Street about 9:15 p.m. after dispatch received a report of an activated fire alarm and sprinkler flow alarm, according to a media release.

The first fire crews to arrive reported an odor of smoke outside the school, the release said.

"Firefighters were met by two night custodians who reported a hazy smoke condition in the school," according to the release.

"Crews found a small fire in the ceiling of a classroom wing of the school," the release said. "The fire had been largely knocked down and kept from spreading thanks to the properly-working sprinkler system, and firefighters were able to get to the fire quickly and extinguish it."

There was no structural damage to the building but there was significant smoke throughout the school, particularly in the "1994-era classroom wing, as well as water damage and fire damage to the immediate affected area," the release said.

No one was injured in the fire.

The cause and origin of the fire remain under investigation by the Concord Fire Department, according to the release.

"The Massachusetts State Fire Marshal's Office was also notified," the release said. "The fire did not immediately appear to be suspicious."
