Mitra Davis, CNM, the midwife who helped deliver the baby, gave birth to her own baby last year in the same room.

“It’s nice to be able to give that feedback to my patients, that this is a great place to have a baby,” Davis said of Emerson Hospital in a statement.

According to Cindy Cantrell of Emerson Hospital, baby Smith arrived five days past his original due date of Feb. 24.

“We tried to coax him by telling him about his nice bed, and how he’ll be able to stretch out,” said Coviello, a first time mother. “It took him a while to come around, but I think it’s special he was born on this day.”

Davis related that this was the first baby she delivered on a Leap Day, having assisted previously in births on Christmas, Fourth of July and Mother’s Day.

“Cheryl was a rock star,” said Davis,” and everything went as planned.”
