Sarasa Presents: Tracing Vienna's Lineage

Vienna evokes cafés filled with literati discussing culture, politics and philosophy--or simply a refuge for escape, to read a newspaper over a Koffee with Kuchen. A Mecca of classical music, Vienna was fertile ground for a long line of illustrious composers to create and push the boundaries of form and musical expression. Sarasa's last concert of the season traces the journey of the string quartet from its inception by Joseph Haydn to the break down of tonal music at the beginning of the 20th century with Anton Webern, a student of Schoenberg. The program finishes with Franz Schubert's extraordinary cello quintet, a work that conjures profundity and fragility, fiery Gypsy drive and the lilting Viennese waltz.
