Take Tea with the Queen! Elizabethan Music, Tuesday, June 20 at 4 PM in Concord

FREE concert of English Renaissance Music performed by Concordia Consort at Trinity Episcopal Church, 81 Elm Street in Concord.

Take Tea with the Queen! Concordia Consort -- soprano Eileen Cecelia Callahan and recorder players Sheila Beardslee, Nouri Newman and Brian Warnock -- present a tea-time concert titled “Elizabeth’s Memories” on Tuesday, June 20 at 4 PM in the air-conditioned parish hall at Trinity Episcopal Church, 81 Elm Street in Concord, MA. Admission is FREE, donations welcomed. Light refreshments follow this 30-minute concert.

This program features music from the court of Henry VIII, Elizabeth’s father, as well as the 50-year span of Elizabeth’s reign. Featured composers from the time of Henry VIII include William Cornysh and John Taverner as well as the king himself. Representing somber and sacred music from Elizabeth’s time are Thomas Morley, Robert White, Robert Mundy and Robert Johnson. Lively music reflecting Elizabethans at play include works by Thomas Weelkes, Michael East, Thomas Tomkins, John Dowland and Thomas Ravenscroft.

Founded in 1995, CONCORDIA CONSORT is the performance ensemble representing Recorders/Early Music Metrowest, the MetroWest’s participatory early music program. For over two decades, Concordia has presented thoughtful programs of English, French and Italian Renaissance and early Baroque music and has contributed special music for services at churches throughout New England. Concordia has been heard in live broadcast for WCRB, WHRB and WGBH Radio and has performed in concerts historic King’s Chapel and Old North Church in downtown Boston, for the Concord Museum, at Middlesex Community College, MIT Chapel, Williams College and other venues. Concordia performs regularly for the Wakefield Opera House series in Sanbornville NH. Concordia Consort was named Ensemble-in-Residence at Trinity Episcopal Church in Concord in 2007.

Concordia’s CD, “Ay me, Ohime,” featuring English and Italian 16th-17th century music, was released in 2009.

Upcoming events in this tea-time series are organist Robert Barney on Tuesday, July 18 and soprano Harriet Bridges on Tuesday, August 21.
