Timothy Cullinane Charged in SWAT Standoff at Emerson Hospital

Authorities said he engaged in a nearly two-hour-long standoff at the hospital's helicopter landing pad Friday.

Timothy Cullinane, 59, of Pepperell, was arrested and charged with a host of crimes after police said he became distraught at the hospital, ran to the helicopter landing pad, pulled out a knife, and threatened to harm himself and police officers.

Cullinane surrendered after about two hours of negotiating with police, authorities said.

“It is very fortunate that this incident ended with no one hurt,” District Attorney Marian Ryan said in a statement. “This man was described as upset this morning and police allege that when officers arrived on the scene, Cullinane pointed a knife at them and made threats. Officers showed restraint, spoke to this defendant, and eventually succeeded in having him surrender.”
