Trinity Episcopal Church Choir sings Bach and more for All Saints' Choral Evensong, November 5
Hear a Bach cantata as the special Prelude to Trinity's All Saints Choral Evensong in Trinity's beautiful sanctuary.

On October 31 in 1517, Catholic priest Martin Luther posted his “95 Theses” (issues he had with the Catholic Church) on the front door of the Wittenburg Cathedral, sparking the German Reformation. In 1725, J. S. Bach wrote Cantata 79, Gott der Herr ist Sonne und Schild (“God the Lord is our sun and shield”), to celebrate that event. To mark the 500th anniversary of Luther’s protest, Trinity Episcopal Church’s Parish Choir, under music director Robert Barney, will sing Bach's magnificent work with orchestra as the prelude to our November 5 service of Choral Evensong. Soloists in the cantata are soprano Harriet Bridges; alto Sheila Beardslee, and bass William Leonard.
On the first Sunday in November the Episcopal Church celebrates the Communion of Saints — all Saints, not just the ones selected by the church but ALL Saints!
In addition to Cantata 79, the orchestra will play a suite by Georg Philipp Telemann, based on "Ein fest' Burg ist unser Gott ("A mighty fortress is our God); at the end of Telemann’s suite, the Parish Choir joins the instrumentalists for the final verse of this magnificent Lutheran chorale.

Evensong — the service of Evening Prayer sung by a choir — dates back to 1549 and is still sung daily in cathedrals in England and other countries within the Anglican Communion. For centuries, the service has inspired the creation of music specifically for it. At Trinity Episcopal Church in Concord, Evensong is held several times over the year, sung by the Trinity Parish Choir (adults) or visiting choirs, and one choral evensong is given annually by Trinity's Youth Choir.
This contemplative program of music and prayer takes place at Trinity Episcopal Church, 81 Elm Street in Concord, and is open to all in the community.
