“Twenty Classic Silent Films and Why They Are Good for You”
A Talk by Randall Warniers at the Concord Free Public Library (Fowler Branch)
CONCORD –The Concord Free Public Library is pleased to announce that Randall Warniers will present a talk on silent films at the Fowler Branch of the Concord Free Public Library (1322 Main Street) on Monday, March 19th at 7:00 PM.
The world was reminded in 2011 of the power and beauty of silent cinema when the Michel Hazanavicius film “The Artist,” done in the style of a silent film, won both the French Cesar and the American Oscar as Best Picture of the Year. This lecture will discuss the thirty-year tradition of silent cinema and give twenty examples of the most interesting films made during that period, by artists such as Buster Keaton, Charlie Chaplin, D.W. Griffith, Mary Pickford, Ernst Lubitsch, King Vidor, F.W. Murnau, and John Ford. Warniers will also discuss the technological progress of cinema from its earliest days as a curiosity in nickelodeons to the artistic upheaval that occurred during the transition to the sound era.
Randall Warniers has pursued interests in 19th-century British literature and early 20th-century American cinema for decades. He has worked in the world of publishing since 1989, and he is currently a freelance editor and book publisher.
