DANVERS, MA — Within a year, adults at the Danvers AMC theater will be able to enjoy an alcoholic beverage in a plush leather seat while watching a movie.

Tuesday night, the selectmen approved a liquor license for the theater at the Liberty Tree Mall. The move to serve alcohol is part of a $9 million renovation of the cinema, AMC officials said.

George Patterson of AMC said they have already spent $1.8 million on the Danvers location and said they are going to do a full face-lift that includes reserved seating, a decrease from 4,000 seats to 1,800 plush luxury recliners, and a premium format with better seats, screens, and audio.

Patterson said they expect to extend their lease at the mall, which ends in 2018.

Overall, the board was receptive to the changes. The selectmen were made aware of the renovation plan during a May 17 presentation from AMC.

“I have been to many theaters that have this and it’s fantastic. You don’t go in there to get drunk,” Chairperson Diane Langlais said.

If all goes according to plan, the new AMC will be ready to go by summer 2017.
