DANVERS, MA — Danvers has installed two new DoodyCalls pet waste receptacles at local walking paths as part of a trial aimed at cutting down on pet waste litter and improving water quality at Sandy Beach.

The new receptacles are now in place at the John George Park walking path and the Thorpe Elementary School walking path.

The town said the effort is intended to help keep parks and paths clean and enjoyable for residents and visitors.

The town said reducing pet waste litter could help improve water quality. No timetable for the trial or additional locations was included in the announcement.

"A big thank you to our residents for helping keep these spaces welcoming and waste-free," the town said. "Every small effort makes a big difference."

Sandy Beach is consistently among those closed for swimming in the summer due to high bacteria levels associated with fecal matter in the water.

That is most likely caused by wastewater leaks or stormwater runoff following rainstorms from soil that includes animal waste.
