LYNNFIELD, MA — The deputy fire chief in Lynnfield is being lauded for helping rescue the driver involved in the oil tanker crash that shut down Route 1 in Danvers on Monday night.
The crash occurred on Route 1 southbound near Centennial Drive in Danvers at about 6:30 p.m., with the tanker left overturned and hundreds of gallons of heating oil spilling onto the highway.
The Lynnfield Fire Department said Deputy Chief Kevin Mutti, who was driving behind the tanker when it crashed, jumped out of his vehicle without any firefighting or personal protective equipment, and rushed through the spewing oil to the tanker where the injured driver was trapped.
Lynnfield fire said Mutti then kicked out the windshield of the truck and pulled the driver to safety.
The driver was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Route 1 southbound was closed for more than an hour with traffic detoured to Route 62 on Monday night as oil spilled onto the highway and crews worked to protect storm drains from the fuel.
"Deputy Mutti's courage and commitment to protecting life exemplify the highest traditions of the fire service and its dedication to serving others," Lynnfield fire said in a social media post, "both on and off duty, and is hereby commended for his actions."
