The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that one in 12 high school students has experienced physical dating violence in the preceding year, and another one in 12 reports themselves as a survivor of physical violence or sexual violence.
Dating violence can take place in person, online, or through technology. It is a type of intimate partner violence that can include physical violence, sexual violence, or non-physical sexual behaviors like posting or sharing sexual pictures of a partner without their consent or sexting someone without their permission. Stalking and psychological aggression are additional ways in which a partner may be mentally or emotionally harmed or controlled.
