Become a Lifelong Learner with Friday Coffee Hours

Salem State's Lifelong Learning Institute hosts free Friday coffee hours for those over 50.

Salem, MA - Explorers Lifelong Learning Institute of Salem State University is hosting complimentary Friday Coffee Hours for North Shore seniors, ages 50 and above.

All are welcome to attend at no charge.

The Coffee Hours will feature guest lecturers and take place at Explorers LLI, 10 Federal Street, Suite 10 in Salem on selected Fridays at 10 am. For more information, visit explorerslli.org, or call 978-744-0804.

“Rich and Poor in America—Consequences of Growing Inequality”
Kevin Y. Beckwith—Assistant Professor, Salem State University

Income inequality in the United States has increased significantly since the 1970s. The share of the nation’s wealth held by upper income households had grown substantially. Globally, 70% of countries have a more equitable income distribution than the U.S. Professor Beckwith will provide evidence that this trend cannot continue without negative societal implications. Kevin Beckwith, Assistant professor of Economics at Salem State University, teaches courses on Principles of Micro and Macroeconomics. He is also owner/operator at Rock Paddle Surf/Kayak Coaching.

“Legendary Locals of Salem”
Dorothy Malcolm & Jerome Curley—Salem Authors and Historians

The book, “Legendary Locals of Salem,” celebrates the eclectic and noteworthy figures that have shaped and continue to shape the Salem community since its founding in 1626 to the present day. The two authors will present images drawn from historical archives and current sources. Dorothy V. Malcolm is a published, professional freelance writer who provides literary and journalistic services. She lives in Salem and is a docent at the PEM. Jerome Curley has published many books and articles on regional history and lives in Salem.

“Third-Party Politics in Massachusetts”
Evan Falchuk—Founder and Chairman, United Independent Party

Nearly 53 percent of voters in Massachusetts are “unenrolled” – choosing not to be tied to either the Democratic or Republican party. Our guest was the United Independent Party candidate for Governor of Massachusetts in the 2014 elections. He will speak on the role of third-party politics and the importance of civic engagement in Massachusetts. Evan Falchuk was formerly an executive at a Boston-based global health care company. Prior to that, he practiced law in Washington, D.C. A graduate of the University of Pennsylvania Law School, he earned a B.A. in History from Lehigh University.
