What's In Your Fuel?

We love to baby our cars with premium fuel, frequent oil changes, washes, etc... Why wouldn't we do the same by our bodies too? A great place to start: fuel your body with the very best!

The latest workout craze seems to be properly fueling your body pre-, during, and post- workout... Have you noticed the Gatorade G Fit advertisements??? "Prime, Perform, Recover." We have!

This concept of prepping for, supporting and recovering from workouts is something we learned four years ago from Brendan Brazier's Thrive vegan nutrition guide; and we practice this using whole, organic, nutritionally dense ingredients.

We've all heard by now: if you don't know what an ingredient is, don't eat it! Here's an ingredient list from a typical commercial energy drink: Niacinamide, Pyridoxine Hydrochloride, Cyanocobalamin, Taurine, Glucuronic Acid, Malic Acid, N-Acetyl, L-Tyrosine, L-Phenylalanine, Caffeine, Citicoline... The list goes on, but you get the picture.

We both love to run, go to Bikram and build muscle lifting weights. How we like to "prime, perform, recover" naturally:

Pre-workout - a direct fuel bite (recipe from Brendan's Thrive book) or a fruit smoothie.

1 medjool date filled with coconut oil and sprinkled with Celtic salt.

1 cup frozen fruit of your choice blended with vanilla and home-made almond milk

Mid-workout - especially if we're sweating (which, let's face it, we should be!) we like to replace electroytes with pure coconut water). Our favorite? Taste Nirvana Real Coconut Water (happiness in a bottle!).

Post-workout - a recovery smoothie with PROTEIN! We like ours chocolate-y.

Frozen almond milk, liquid almond milk, cacao, maca, 20g protein (rice or whey), vanilla stevia to sweeten. Add half a frozen avocado to make a meal that will last HOURS. (280-340 nutritionally dense calories depending on how you make yours).

Nature provides everything our bodies need to perform, excel, be the very absolute best we can be. Why mess with perfection?
