Teenage Confidential: The Origins of Teen Culture
Join us with presenter/author Michael Barson who will discuss the origins of teenage culture, covering the period from 1939 to 1969. This is based on his book Teenage Confidential, and will include a power point presentation that employs illustrations of popular culture artifacts from his personal collection— movie posters, magazine covers, record sleeves, comic books, advice manuals, paperback books, and other vintage materials that evoke the period and the rise of Teens in American culture. A Q & A will follow after the presentation and there will be books available for purchase.
About the Presenter/Author:
Michael Barson is the editor of the popular postcard books Lost, Lonely, Born to Be Bad, and Boy Loves Girl, Girl Loves Boy. He also edited Flywheel, Shyster, and Flywheel: The Marx Brother's Lost Radio Show which has been translated into six languages and dramatized by the BBC. His work has appeared in The New York Times, Entertainment Weekly, Rolling Stone, American Film, Newsday, Publishers Weekly, and Nostalgia, and he been a frequent guest on NPR's "Fresh Air" program. Barson has an M.A. in Popular Culture and a Ph.D. in American Culture from Bowling Green State University in Ohio , where he taught for five years. He is the author of 12 other books about pop culture in addition to TEENAGE CONFIDENTIAL. He and his wife now live in Atkinson.
