COVID-19 Affected Danver’s Resident Nick Rizos In Unexpected Way

After speaking with the Youth Leadership team of the American Red Cross, Rizos decided to create and lead a North Shore Youth Chapter.

Rizos, a St John’s Prep student-athlete, just finished his freshman year. As his parents worked on the front lines treating patients with COVID-induced conditions, he spent the last 3 months learning academics from home.

“St. John’s Prep overcame every possible obstacle to ensure that students continued to both learn and feel connected to teachers and peers,” Rizos said. “After my fear left, I wanted to help my community in some fashion.”

After speaking with the Youth Leadership team of the American Red Cross, he decided to create & lead a North Shore Youth Chapter.

“The Red Cross Club provides youth opportunities that make a very meaningful impact in the community - by both addressing its greatest needs and developing leadership skills,” said Rizos. “This club with empower us with knowledge and life-saving skills to help prepare schools and communities respond to emergencies.”

All club members need to be registered Red Cross volunteers via the Volunteer Connection database (volunteerconnection.redcross.org). Members will be part of the North Shore Community Club.

The Club will be both monitored and guided by the MA Regional Youth Engagement Team.

Student involvement will be both at the community & state level. After 2 years of experience, volunteers can apply to become part of the Red Cross National Youth Council.

Students age 13-17 may join from any North Shore technical, private or public high school. Quarterly meetings will be held.

Full exposure to state-wide Red Cross volunteering opportunities
Basic Life Support training
Life Guard training
Hosting Blood Drives.
Being part of the Sound the Alarm/Home Fire Safety Campaign (age >16)
Hosting a Fall Activities Fair
Participating in lectures from senior state EMS members, nurses, physicians and other health professions
Exposure to International Humanitarian Law (IHL)
All IHL training is hosted in person or virtually. The IHL Youth Action Campaign has an Annual Summit which you can apply to attend in July 2021, after participating in the Campaign.
A free, one-day course to train policy professionals, government officials, academics and the general public regarding the fundamental principles of international humanitarian law.
