Unfortunately for the Marblehead Magicians, the Falcons handed them a loss in their first game by scoring a goal two minutes into the game and another with less than two minutes to go.

Marblehead’s offense sputtered for most of the first half; the Magicians controlled the ball for long stretches of play but couldn't get any shots on Falcon goalie Gabrielle Torchia.

A single shot by Marblehead co-captain Liz Kaplan was all the offense Marblehead could generate before halftime. Weems stopped four Danvers shots to keep it a one-goal game at the break.

“We had some first game jitters, for sure,” Marblehead coach Linda Collins said. “Especially in the first half, we played much better in the second half when the girls relaxed a little bit.”

Marblehead dominated play for most of the second half, finally getting on the score sheet when Tyler Phillips drilled a shot past Torchia from 15 feet out to tie the game.

With the game clock ticking down, Falcon Nicole Pszenny got a shot off that Weems kicked out, but the rebound rolled to Trocchi on the right side and she batted it into the net with under 90 seconds left in the game.

Marblehead pushed the ball into the Danvers end as the clock wound down, but cold not get a quality shot in tight on Torchia, and the Falcons improved to 2-0.

“We did a lot of good things, there were a lot of positives we can take from this game,” Collins said. “It would have been nice to start with a win, but we learned a few things and we’ll use them in our next game.”

Danvers will travel to take on Saugus tomorrow, Wednesday Sept. 14, at the Stackpole Field at 3:45 p.m.
