Danvers Gas Station to Face Hearing for For Allegedly Selling Beer to Underage Operative

Police say the Mobil gas station on Newbury Street told alcohol to a teen during a liquor license compliance check.

DANVERS, MA — A gas station that allegedly sold a six-pack of beer to a minor during a compliance check will face a hearing in front of the selectmen.

Tuesday night, the board voted to hold a hearing for the Mobil station on Newbury Street and discuss possible actions and a license suspension.

Danvers Police Captain Philip Tansey told the board that of the 49 establishments in Danvers, the Mobil was the only one that failed the check. On June 17, police, along with an 18-year-old operative, conducted the check as the gas station’s store, Tansey said. The operative went into the store and was allegedly able to purchase a six-pack of beer without being asked for identification by the clerk.

Two officers immediately returned to the store with the beer and informed the clerk of his actions. The clerk allegedly told police that he thought the teen was in the store during the previous week and carded her then.

The owners have been advised of the violation. The hearing is scheduled for Sept. 6.
