Danvers Girls Track Down a Pair of Wins

Amanda Caldarone and Xanthi Pantazelos lead the Falcons past Swampscott, 73-63.

Amanda Caldarone won three events and Xanthi Pantazelos recorded three personal bests to lead the Danvers High girls’ track team to a 73-63 win against Swampscott Wednesday. The Falcons are now 3-1.

The win keeps Danvers in the race for a fourth consecutive Northeastern Conference crown with remaining meets against Salem, Marblehead and Peabody, starting with Monday’s visit to Salem (4 p.m.). Danvers will also compete in tomorrow’s State Relays at Stoneham High School.

Caldarone captured the 100 high hurdles (16.3), long jump (16-4) and triple jump (32-4). Pantazelos tied Courtney Saunders’ 1995 school record while winning the 100 in 12.9. She added a victory in the 200 in 26.9 and took and improved her long jump by more than a foot, claiming third with a 15-1 effort.

Carson Garvin and Caroline Morrocco remained undefeated in the weight events. Garvin won the shot put (31-8) and discus (91-0) and Morrocco unleashed a season-best throw of 91-0 in the javelin. Ali Barker added a win in the mile (5:48) and Corinne Previte led a 400 sweep in 64.6. Haley Dyer added a second in the 800 with a time of 2:36, coming back from a stress fracture suffered during the winter. The 4x100 relay team of Caldarone, Kelsey O'Brien, Emily Behen and Lauren Sundquist qualified for the State Meet with a time of 53.8.

The Falcons ran over Saugus in an earlier meet, 100-33, winning 11 events and sweeping six. Winners were: Caldarone (100 hurdles, 19.2; long jump, 14-11.5), Garvin (shot put, 30-2.5; discus, 81-1), Pantazelos (200, 28.0), O'Brien (400 hurdles, 1:23.7), Erin Barker (two-mile, 13:35), Courtney Godfrey (mile, 6:02), Brianna Stoney (javelin, 77-0), the 4x100 relay team of Caldarone, Behen, O'Brien and Sundquist (56.5); and the 4x400 relay team of Rene Pohle, Bridget Leahy, Barker and Kristin Yost (4:44).

GIRLS’ LACROSSE trailed at halftime, 6-5, but scored seven unanswered goals in a 15-9 win against Beverly at Hurd Stadium Tuesday.

“We played a solid second half, making big stops in the defensive end and finishing our shots in the attack,” said coach Julie Bevad. Goalie Janelle Parker finished with 14 saves while Alison Tivnan, Alex Strangie, Alyson Spencer, Rebecca Cann and Katharine Jennings provided solid defensive support.

Sara Perry powered the offense with five goals while Rachel Trocchi and Katie McKenna connected for four each and Julia Calasciebetta and Jennings contributed two each. Caroline Crateau picked up an assist.

GIRLS’ TENNIS improved to 5-2 with a pair of 3-2 wins at Plains Park. The Falcons defeated Gloucester on Wednesday and edged Beverly last Friday.

The Falcons swept the singles matches in straight sets to defeat Gloucester with No. 1 Becca Sands (6-2, 7-5), No. 2 Rachel Ziner (6-1, 6-1) and No. 3 Paige Clarizia (6-1, 6-0) all winning convincingly. Against Beverly, Clarizia (3-6, 6-2, 6-4) and the doubles tandems of No. 1 Mary Kate Grace and Kristen Kulakowski (7-6, 6-2) and No. 2 Rebecca Hayden and Danielle Comb (6-1, 6-2) prevailed.

Danvers resumed action Friday afternoon with a non-league match at Hamilton-Wenham and has matches next Monday, Wednesday and Friday against Lynn English, Winthrop and Salem.

BOYS’ TRACK got run down by Swampscott on Wednesday, 91-36. The Falcons take part in Saturday’s State Relays at Stoneham and visit Salem on Monday.

BASEBALL ran its record to 5-1 in the NEC South (8-1 overall) with an 8-3 win against Lynn English on Wednesday. The Falcons opened the week with a 7-3 win at Gloucester on Monday and were scheduled to take on Lynn English at home on Friday.

SOFTBALL won its second straight with a 9-0 win at Lynn English on Wednesday. The Falcons routed Swampscott Monday, 14-2, in a game halted by the mercy rule. Danvers (4-2) visited Lynn Classical on Friday.

BOYS’ LACROSSE dropped a tough 12-11 decision to Beverly on Tuesday and gets back in action Tuesday at home against Marblehead.

BOYS’ TENNIS dropped a 4-1 non-league decision to Cambridge Rindge & Latin on Tuesday and had non-league matches scheduled against Malden Catholic today and Bishop Fenwick on Monday, both at home.

St. John’s Prep

TRACK ran past Catholic Memorial Wednesday, 83-51, powered by double-winner Sean Enos and personal bests from Scott Sheehan and Nick Pesaturo. Enos captured both the shot put (50-6) and discus (146-6) while Sheehan prevailed in the javelin (162-3) and Pesaturo claimed the long jump (20-8).

Jarret Harrigan won the mile in 4:45.8 off a 2:28 first 800 while Patrick Murphy won the 800m in 2:03.1 and Brandon West was victorious in the 400m in 53.1. Bryan Browne placed second in both the 100 (11.5) and the 200 (22.6), which coach Ray Carey said was the fastest 200 he could recall in a dual meet at SJP in his 35 years as coach.

The Eagles take part in Sunday’s Division One State Relays at Franklin High School.

BASEBALL scooped up a pair of one-run wins, defeating B.C. High on Wednesday, 4-3, and Malden Catholic on Monday, 1-0.

Ryan Pantaleo served up 14 groundball outs in an efficient 68-pitch performance against B.C. High. He scattered four hits and struck out three. Justin Peluso played well at shortstop, tripled home the Eagles’ first run and scored their second. Rory Garrison tripled in St. John’s third run and scored the eventual game-winner on a sacrifice fly by Sean Patrikas.

Pat Connaughton picked up his second win against Malden Catholic, striking out 11 while allowing just one hit. Tyler Coppola's sacrifice fly delivered Anthony Capuano with the game-winning run in the bottom of the seventh.

The Eagles (9-1) return to action Tuesday afternoon at St. John’s of Shrewsbury.

TENNIS ran its record to 6-0 with consecutive 5-0 whitewashes of Catholic Memorial, Newton North and Malden Catholic. The Eagles hit the road for a match at Great Barrington tomorrow, then return home to face St. John’s of Shrewsbury Monday.

LACROSSE leveled its record at 4-4 with an 18-5 romp past St. John’s of Shrewsbury Wednesday. The Eagles visit Duxbury Saturday and take on Malden Catholic at home Tuesday.

VOLLEYBALL improved to 8-2, sandwiching a pair of well-played 3-2 wins against Xaverian and Central Catholic around a . Senior Matt Genetelli continues to be an assist machine for the Eagles, who play at Chelmsford tonight and take on B.C. High at home Monday.

SAILING takes part in a four-team event this weekend at The Hotchkiss School, followed by competitions at Marblehead on Monday and against Winchester on Wednesday.

RUGBY tackles Bishop Hendricken at home on Tuesday and Xaverian at home on Friday.
