Danvers Hockey Players Earn Boston Bruins/MIAA Sportsmanship Awards

One girls hockey and one boys hockey athlete were honored in the 24th annual awards.

DANVERS, MA — Two Danvers hockey players were among the student-athletes from across the state honored with Boston Bruins/MIAA Sportsmanship Awards for this past season.

The 24th annual awards honors athletes for their exemplary record of complying, both in spirit and letter, with all league an MIAA rules and regulations, their demonstrated record of respectfully accepting the rulings of game officials, their record of conduct on and off the ice that brings honor to self, team, school and community, their commitment to teamwork by providing all members with recognition of their talents, an opportunity to contribute to the team, and their spirit of camaraderie, as well as a demonstrated respect for opponents before, during and after games.

Seniors Ashley Freitas and Thomas Fish were honored as representatives from the Northeastern Conference.

"Ashley Freitas embodies what it means to be a true student athlete," Danvers Athletic Director Drew Betts said. "She is competitive, selfless, always puts her team first.

"Whether on the ice in hockey or on the field in soccer, she leads with heart, resilience, and a level of character that makes everyone around her better."

Betts said Fish "represents everything you hope for in a student-athlete."

"He has a great work ethic, is humble in his success, and is fully committed to his teammates," Betts said. "Whether competing on the ice for hockey or on the course for golf at Danvers High School, he leads with consistency, character, and quiet determination."
