Danvers Man Named Marine of the Year

Danvers, MA—A Danvers man has been named the Marine of the Year by the Military Times.

Marine Gunnery Sgt. Brian Downing was recently honored by the magazine.

Downing only needed 10 years to make gunnery and is a semester away from his master's degree.

A veteran of Afghanistan and Iraq, Downing was tasked with providing his anti-terror team with the necessary items for a seven-month deployment. In the process, he rewrote the standard operating procedure to reflect the current tactics and technology.

Every year, the magazine picks a serviceperson of the year from the Army, Navy, Marines, Coast Guard, and Air Force.
