Danvers Plastic Bag Ban Takes Effect June 1
East Boston Savings bank has donated 2,000 reusable bags to the town.
From The Town of Danvers: On June 1, 2019, the Town of Danvers will begin implementing the Plastic Bag Reduction By-Law that was approved last year at Town Meeting. This ban will affect retail stores at the point of sale by removing the single-use plastic shopping bag that has become typical of the industry.
In anticipation of June 1st, the Town has worked closely with the Earth Stewards, a local group that spearheaded the prohibition, to ensure a smooth transition for local businesses. One such effort included the collection of re-usable shopping bags, both new and used, at Town Hall to
be redistributed to residents for their use in local businesses. This effort recently received a big boost recently, when East Boston Savings Bank stepped forward and offered to donate 2,000 re-usable bags to the cause. “East Boston Savings Bank is happy to support the Town of Danvers in preserving our environment by donating a supply of eco-friendly reusable bags for distribution at various town events,” says Nancy Hathaway, VP, Danvers Branch Manager.
“This display of generosity by a Danvers business in support of other local businesses is part of what makes Danvers such a great community in which to live, work and do business. The Town has a long history of residents, businesses, and civic groups coming together to support important causes. My guess is that the example set by East Boston will likely encourage others to do the same,” said Town Manager Steve Bartha. As part of the community outreach and education about the detrimental effects of plastic waste in our environment, the donated bags will be handed out by volunteers at the Town’s Zero Waste Day Recycling Event at Danvers High School, from 9am to 1pm, on May 4th and 5th. Bags also will be offered to voters at the May 7th elections, at Danvers High School, just outside the polling area.

Donations of used bags at the Town Hall collection bin will be washed by volunteers from the Earth Stewards and delivered to the People to People Food Pantry on Sylvan Street to ensure that the economic impact of this by-law is reduced significantly for families and those on fixed incomes. If any local businesses or organizations wish to join this effort by donating new or gently used re-usable bags, they will gladly be accepted. Assistant Health Director Mark Carleo can be reached at extension 3022 and will gladly assist you in making your donation.
