Danvers Rep Ends Push For Liquor Store Coupons

The proposal had pitted small liquor store owners against national chains.

DANVERS, MA -- State Rep. Ted Speliotis (D-Danvers) withdrew an amendment from an economic development bill Tuesday that would have allowed liquor stores to offer coupons. Owners of small liquor stores had banded together to oppose the bill, saying they would not be able to offer the steep discounts offered by the national retailers they compete with.

While Speliotis had called the amendment a "good consumer bill," he told the Salem News, which first reported this story, that "the industry is so divided between large and small package stores, it's an uphill battle to pass." The Consumer First Coalition had pushed for the bill. The coalition is backed by Total Wine & More, a national chain of liquor stores which has a location at the Liberty Tree Mall in Danvers.
