Danvers Riders in the Pan-Mass. Challenge This Weekend

The 34th Annual Pan-Mass. Challenge is this weekend. Check out who's riding from Danvers.

Ten Danvers residents will be biking up to 190 miles over two days in the 34th Annual Pan-Mass. Challenge this weekend.

The charitable ride draws more than 5,000 cyclists each year, who hail from 36 states and eight countries and range in age from 13 to 88. The 2013 goal is to raise $38 million for the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.

Some riders, such as Danvers resident John Bobrek, are regulars in the PMC each year to support friends and loves ones suffering from cancer. This is Bobrek's seventh consecutive PMC.

There are two starting lines on Saturday -- one in Sturbridge and one in Wellesley -- and five finish lines that allow bikers to pedal different routes and distances. The finish lines are in Bourne, Wellesley, Foxboro and two in Provincetown.

PMC says cyclists can choose from 11 routes that are designed to meet their abilities both physically and in terms of fundraising power. Six two-day routes range from 153 to 190 miles and five one-day rides range from 25 to 110 miles. Cyclists are required to raise between $500 and $5,000 to ride, depending on the route.

Since the charity was founded more than 30 years ago by Billy Starr, who lost his mother to melanoma at the age of 49, the PMC has raised $375 million for cancer research. It is the largest single contributor to the Jimmy Fund, bringing in nearly 50 percent of its annual revenue.
