1982

Remember when the wasn't open on Sunday? Beginning this week in 1982, the mall allowed 13 fast food restaurants -- all exempt from the state blue laws -- to open on Sunday afternoons. The mall manager stated "we intend to make it a day of entertainment. There will be a band and dacing. People can come in after church, have lunch, browse and enjoy themselves."

Selectmen were torn over what to do with the building. "The problem" Selectman John L. George was quoted stating, "is two want to sell it, one and half want to lease it, and one doesn't want to lease or sell it." At the time, proposals for the space included condominiums, office space, elderly housing, or a temporary space for .

The former Danvers Police Department building closed in 1976, and in 1982 was offered to Middleton at a 'low price.' Town Manager Wayne Marquis told the Herald, Middleton was being very cooperative with Danvers in its plans to expand the Emerson Brook Reservoir as a future water source for Danvers, and the sale was being done "in the spirit of neighborliness." At the time, Middleton Police were working in a small space at Middleton Town Hall.

A study done in December 1981 showed that gypsy moths were expected to cause severe defoliation in Danvers during the fall, despite the fact that the previous year Danvers had fared well in comparison to other North Shore communities. The Board of Selectmen implemented a three-part plan to control the insects.
