Essex County Habitat for Humanity Holds Women Build Week

Essex County Habitat for Humanity held their semi-annual Women Build Week bringing together 30 women to help build ten affordable homes in Haverhill and six affordable homes in Hamilton.

State Representative Kristin Kassner kicked off the week with opening remarks to the women volunteers from Windover Construction, who was one of the sponsors of the event. These volunteers worked hard, alongside future homebuyer Andrea, to lay cobblestones at the entrance of her home-to-be in Hamilton.

Later in the week, at Habitat’s newest build site in Haverhill, the first group of volunteers to work on the project included four women from sponsor Pidgeon & Co., a woman owned construction management company. Work there entailed squaring the foundation and installing sill plates for the future homebuyers who will be selected by lottery later this month.

On Friday, another group of local ladies worked in Hamilton finishing and painting the back decks. They also enjoyed a lunch that one of the volunteers who works at Texas Roadhouse arranged to have donated.

Women Build is an initiative that empowers women to positively impact lives in their communities in a supportive and inclusive environment. Since 1991, Women Build volunteers from all walks of life have come together to build stronger, safer communities.

The future owners of the homes, four of whom are single mothers, are low to moderate income, hardworking families who have been working alongside volunteers to help build their own homes. It is a day of building, learning and camaraderie – women helping women.
