Habitat for Humanity breaks ground on affordable home in Haverhill

On Thursday, June 27, Essex County Habitat for Humanity broke ground on its newest affordable homeownership project in Haverhill. This duplex home, when complete, will provide a more stable foundation on which to build a stronger future for two hard working families.

Habitat Executive Director, Meegan O’Neil, thanked those who have given their financial support as well as those who have offered their professional services pro-bono to get the project started, spurring an impromptu commitment from IBEW Local 103 to do the electrical work pro-bono as well. “It truly takes a community to make this work possible,” O’Neil commented.

As Pati Fernandez, Haverhill resident and Habitat Family Selection Committee Co-Chair explained, the average single family home price has reached $900,000 in greater Boston, making homeownership even more out of reach for low-income families who often hold down two jobs while trying to raise a family. People are leaving Massachusetts because they can’t afford to live here.

“When you’re making minimum wage, paying rent versus an affordable mortgage makes a huge difference. We’re creating an opportunity to give someone their independence and partner with them in a dignified way to keep them in our community,” expressed Fernandez.

Nik Orellana presented a citation from State Representative Andy Vargas and the Massachusetts House of Representatives, congratulating Habitat for the groundbreaking and their continued support of homeownership opportunities across Essex County.

“This is exciting for the city of Haverhill, Mayor Melinda Barrett who spoke next said. “Homeownership is how we build generational wealth and stability in our community. We’re giving people the opportunity to live the American dream and see the fruition of their hard work and efforts.”

After the speakers finished, they donned hard hats and put ceremonial first shovels in the ground.
