Danvers To Hold Tribute For Martin Luther King, Jr. On Monday

Celebration to feature vocals by Building Bridges Through Music, Danvers High School students, North Shore Unitarian Church Singing Group.

DANVERS, MA – The Danvers Committee for Diversity and the Danvers Public Schools invite you to the annual "Tribute to Martin Luther King, Jr.: Drum Major for Justice," on Monday, Jan. 16, 2017 at Danvers High School from 4 to 6 p.m.

Thanks to event sponsors NorthEast Community Bank and CVS Health, there is no charge to attend, but food pantry items are appreciated. Additional support is provided by Danvers Educational Enrichment Partnership (DEEP) and Danvers Rotary.

Musical performances will include vocal ensembles from Building Bridges Through Music (Follow Hymn Chorus), Danvers High School and the North Shore Unitarian Universalist Church, both individually and jointly.

Art inspired by Dr. King and created by Danvers students in grades 3 - 12 will be on display, and excerpts from Dr. King's writings will be shared by Students United for Acceptance.

In keeping with the theme of Community Service that the Dr. King Holiday seeks to emphasize, attendees are asked to bring an item for the People to People Food Pantry.

Those who wish to be listed in the Program Tribute Book can purchase an ad by emailing danversdiversity@gmail.com. Proceeds will support the Friends of the Danvers Committee for Diversity scholarships, given to a Danvers High School student or students who have worked demonstrably to create a climate of acceptance at D.H.S. for all students, regardless of religion, race, gender, orientation, income or disability, and Diversity programs, including the Gay Pride flag raising, the Community Menorah and our website, www.danversdiversity.org

The Committee for Diversity is a task force against discrimination and bigotry in all forms. It was was established in 1997 . Members are appointed by the Board of Selectmen. Through dialogue with town police and school leadership and through partnerships with the Peabody Institute Library, North Shore Alliance of Gay and Lesbian Youth and others, the committee works to create awareness and understanding by challenging homophobia, racism and anti-Semitism. The Committee receives no town appropriation, but is assisted by the part-time support of Town planning staff.
