North Shore Route 1 Crash Kills Driver Thursday Morning

TOPSFIELD, MA — A single-car Route 1 crash in Topsfield early in the Thursday morning commute killed the male driver.

The Essex County District Attorney's Office and Topsfield Chief Neal Hovey said a passing motorist saw the crashed vehicle off Route 1 at about 7:30 a.m. They said it is believed the driver was traveling north, crossed the southbound lane, and ended up on the west side of the road in the area of 15 Boston Street.

The Topsfield Fire Department declared the sole occupant of the vehicle dead a short time later.

The driver's identity is being withheld pending the notification of family and friends.

The crash is being investigated by the Massachusetts State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section and the Topsfield Police Department.
