Obituary: Frederick E. Clay, Owned Clay Sign and Crane Service

Frederick E. Clay, 83, died Monday evening, November 17, 2014 at his home surrounded by his family. He was the husband of the late Barbara (Shinnick) Clay.
Born in Danvers on Jan. 2, 1931, he was the son of the late Earl Clay and Eva (Clement) (Clay) Hyytinen. He was raised and educated in Danvers and was a graduate of Holten High School, Class of 1949. An outstanding football player, he was an inductee into the Danvers Blue and White Club’s Hall of Fame.
Fred owned and operated Clay Sign and Crane Service in Rockport for over forty years.
He enjoyed exercise and being outdoors even in his later years, and was an avid bicyclist. He was an animal lover and was proud of maintaining his home and yard; he especially enjoyed the company of his grandchildren.
He leaves three children, Michael Clay and his wife Laura, Kelley Greel and her husband Michael, and Daniel Clay and his wife Lisa, all of Rockport, his brother Earl Clay and his wife Betty of Danvers, five grandchildren, Molly, Hannah, and Adam Clay, and Erin and Daniel Greel, as well as several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by two sisters, Barbara and Priscilla.
His Graveside Service will be Friday, Nov. 21, 2014 at 11AM in Annunciation Cemetery. Relatives and friends are invited. As requested, there are no visiting hours. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Cape Ann Animal League, 4 Paws Lane, Gloucester, MA 01930.
