Dr. McGovern is also the inventor of the McGovern Movement Score (MMS), which measures the quality of basic human movements and how well one moves to help predict possible future injury. A sports enthusiast and athlete himself, he has been analyzing the biomechanics of golfers and baseball pitchers for more than 15 years in order to improve athletic results.

Danvers Patch caught up with Dr. McGovern to find out a little more about the man and his therapy techniques.

Q. Where are you from originally?

A. I’m originally from Wallingford, Conn. I went to Northeastern in 1989 and never left! I loved Boston and love the city. My friends stayed here, so here I am!”

Q. What types of injuries do you see?

A. We see everything from spine-related, back and neck injuries, to a lot of post surgical work. We also have a good reputation for sports injuries.

Q. You developed the McGovern Movement Score — how does the MMS predict future injury?

A. Basically it’s a movement test, I didn’t reinvent the wheel, but what we have done is we’ve quantified a score, or number, to the proper movement. For instance, most people do a squat wrong, like when you go to pick up a couch, the first thing we are taught is to bend our knees. That’s totally wrong. You can’t build a house with a bad foundation.

I see so many of the injuries from bad foundation and poor movement patterns. Injury comes from repetitive strain from bad fundamental movement. For instance, have you ever seen a toddler drop something, and squat down to pick it up? They have a perfect squat because they haven’t been told the wrong way to do it. As we grow, we cheat and teach our bodies improper movement, by twisting and having bad form. There’s a lot of bad information out there.

Our goal is to perfect fundamental movement. I want to see people excercise in the safest way to get results.

Q. What is your success rate?

A. We have a less than 5 percent return for the same injuries; we don’t want you back, we want you fixed so you can stay fixed — most of that starts with basic movement and how important that is.

Q. When was the official opening of the Danvers facility?

A. We opened Monday and are now taking appointments — the construction is 95 percent completed!
