Prep Athletics Off to Solid Start This Season

The Eagles' start to the season was not without a few bumps in some sports, but the Prep players picked up a number of wins this past week.

Volleyball rebounds after opening loss

After starting off the season with a rough home loss to Catholic Conference rival Xaverian Brothers on March 31, the Prep volleyball team came back for two straight wins — still on the home court — against Millis (April 1) and Chelmsford April 6). The Eagles took both contests 3-0. The Eagles lost to Xaverian in five games: 25-18, 16-25, 25-15, 15-25 and then 18-20. The numbers for the Millis defeat were 25-18, 25-19 and 25-19 while the Chelmsford sweep was 25-21, 25-18 and 25-22.

A home game scheduled against Medfield High this week was postponed to April 12 and an away game vs. Catholic Memorial was moved back to April 20. This Saturday, the Eagles travel to Holyoke to the Volleyball Hall of Fame for a day tournament. before returning to Danvers to host Catholic Memorial April 11 (6:30 p.m.).

Baseball goes 2-0 to start season

Despite some wicked wind and the cold on April 6 putting a damper on the match-up with Peabody, the Eagles walked away with a 6-2 win, before . The Eagles are scheduled to play two home games: Xaverian Brothers on April 11 (4 p.m.) and Catholic Memorial April 13 (4 p.m.), followed by an away game versus Everett High School on April 16.

Tennis starts off in win column

The Eagles’ tennis club defeated Xaverian, 5-0, April 7 at home with strong efforts by Cameron Trosin, Spencer Canny and Chris Toner in singles matches and John Corvi/Bradley Noyes and Mark Corvi/Mike Veluch taking the doubles. The Prep faces off with Boston College High School on April 12 at home (4 p.m.) before traveling to Phillips Exeter Academy April 13 (3:45 p.m.).

Lacrosse champs lose one, win one

St. John’s championship lacrosse squad suffered defeat at the hands of Catholic Memorial April 5, 7-8, but came back to put a beating on Malden Catholic April 7, 6-2. The Eagles continue with another away game April 12 against Xaverian and return home to host B.C. High April 14 (4 p.m.).

Rugby powers to two wins

The Eagles’ rugby club is fresh off two wins from the past two weeks. First, a 55-5 bruising on Lincoln-Sudbury on March 28, followed by a sound defeat of B.C. High, 22-5, after getting a slow start on April 5. The Prep has two games scheduled for next week: Belmont April 11 and Brookline April 13.

Sailing off to strong start

The Eagles’ sailing team first defeated Duxbury on April 2, 3-0, and then Lincoln-Sudbury on April 5, 5-0, and a third win against Marblehead, 3-2, on April 7. The Prep sailors were scheduled to race Saturday against Tabor Academy at Quannapowitt Yacht Club in Wakefield and then three straight days of racing starting April 12 against Winchester, Belmont and Hingham.

Ultimate disc tosses ahead of the field

The Eagles’ ultimate disc club defeated North Andover High School April 6, 15-0, and then Manchester-Essex Regional High School, 15-9, on April 7. The Prep takes to the field against Timberlane Regional High School on April 14 in Plaistow, N.H.
