Salon Oasis Is On The Cutting Edge

This week's business spotlight is thriving after undergoing changes this year.

Patch Readers Choice Award Winner 2012, Salon Oasis has been a staple in the Hawthorne North Plaza on Route One for over twelve years. Promising the “Newbury Street experience of Boston at a price you can afford,” the salon, owned by Beverly native Dickie Gurrette, had maintained a core group of stylists from the very beginning.

But, as many businesses evolve and change over the years, Salon Oasis has undergone something of a metamorphosis.

Last fall the business experienced staff changes, a transfer of ownership and a fresh marketing perspective. The shake-up resulted in a "new" Salon Oasis, that is just as fresh and fun as ever-and totally reinvigorated.

Gurrette described the ownership transfer as more of a partnership between himself and longtime stylist Adrienne DeLuccia, affording him the ability to take a step back from the day to day responsibilities of the salon. “She’s wonderful, and we’ve worked together for a long time. I’m still here, and not going anyplace, but I’m basically sharing the title with her,” he said.

Discovering people who love what they do, and are equally as good at their jobs may be a challenge for some, but for Gurrette it seemingly comes very naturally. The addition of Front Desk Receptionist Jarrett Hanley, for instance, was instrumental to re-building his team.

When Danvers native Hanley interviewed for the position last fall, he recognized Gurette immediately as a ‘regular’ at a local restaurant where he was a waiter. The two hit it off and, once hired, the graduate of Salem State who majored in communications began utilizing the skills he learned in college to market Salon Oasis.

“He got us on the ball with Facebook right away...it was a good thing. We have had a lot of nice new young people in the salon, and have a nice crew going on. Sometimes the new blood brings it in,” Gurrette explained.

From Hanley’s perspective, the use of social media and the internet has propelled (Salon Oasis) back into the spotlight. “We thought it was a great way to reach out to people, so we used the opportunity to make the salon grow, took on a couple new hairdressers, took on social networking and discovered the Patch...and our customer feedback has been overwhelmingly positive,” he said.

Salon Oasis services include color, cutting, foiling, Simply Smooth Keratin (full strength and temporary), waxing, flat iron styling, Curling iron work and much more. They use Goldwell color, and are experienced in corrective color, and offer the popular hair and tinsel  extensions in a variety of shades and colors.

The salon is currently running a special for new clients where they will receive 20 percent off their first visit with Allison, Christina or Lauren. For clients who are uncertain about committing to a style or product, the salon keeps a before and after photo album, so clients can get a feel for what they do.

The best part about joining the team at Salon Oasis for Hanley, is working for Gurrette, who Hanley described as someone who, “loves what he does, and makes it a fun, happy atmosphere. So many places give you that ‘your a number feel,’ but here there is no attitude, no arrogance. Customer service is our top priority.”

“I love it here,” he continued. “We all have the same goal in mind: To see the salon thrive and succeed. And as long as our clients are happy, we know we’re doing our job right.”
