St. John's Basketball Shoots Down East Boston

Eagles pass an early-season test and now look forward to next week's Chelsea Tournament.

The undefeated St. John's Prep basketball team passed its stiffest test to date Thursday night, knocking off a talented East Boston club, 67-51, at Salem State University's Twohig Gymnasium.

The Eagles (3-0) built a 27-21 halftime lead and gradually pulled away throughout the second half. St. John's continued to excel from long distance, knocking down nine 3-pointers. Junior Mike Carbone led the onslaught with 24 points, including four triples. Steve Haladyna added 16 points and Pat Connaughton contributed a dozen, including a pair of trifectas. The Eagles also excelled defensively, containing the high-octane East Boston (2-2) offense.

The Eagles bounce back into action tonight at 7:15 against highly-regarded New Mission in the semifinal round of the Chelsea Tournament at Chelsea High School. New Bedford and Mansfield meet in the other semifinal, with the consolation and championship games scheduled for Wednesday (the games were pushed back a day due to the blizzard this weekend).
